Our Community

The town’s largest population growth occurred during the 1950’s and 60’s when suburban development provided new housing opportunities for people exiting the more densely populated areas of the state. Today the town’s population exceeds 35,000, and Cumberland remains a desired destination for those seeking access to attractive housing options, access to open space, recreation and good public schools.

The most recent census reports that 18% of Cumberland’s population is over the age of 65. Thirty percent of the plus 65 population lives alone. Sixty percent of the plus 65 report fair or poor health status. And 21% report some form of ambulatory difficulty.

A community survey completed during the exploratory phase of our Cumberland Village initiative revealed the following needs among Cumberland’s older residents:

  • Better access to transportation options for those who no longer drive
  • Assistance with running errands
  • Help to do routine household chores
  • Being isolated and expressing the desire for more social interaction

Through an innovative model of volunteer neighbors helping neighbors, the mission of Cumberland Village is to address these needs by providing supports and services that allow older residents of our town to age safely and productively in place in their homes. Ongoing assistance is available to residents who become village members.
