About Us

The town of Cumberland, originally called Attleboro Gore, was received from Massachusetts in 1746, and incorporated and renamed Cumberland in honor of Prince William, the Duke of Cumberland, England. In 1747, it became part of Providence County. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the textile and mining industries played an important role in the growth of the town. The Lonsdale Mill (known now as the former Ann & Hope complex) was built in 1886. The town is also the site of the former Cumberland Farm, the forerunner of the Cumberland Farms retail chain.
