About Aquidneck Island Village
A Steering Committee of local residents worked for over a year with The Village Common of RI to form a village for older adults on the island. Aquidneck Island Village became a reality and began offering services in June 2024.
It has been truly a grassroots effort of neighbors and friends deciding this was one small way we could make a difference in our communities. We realized from our own experiences that many people could use a little help handling the challenges of aging, whether they live alone – or with a partner – when they can’t quite manage all that they used to be able to do.
The village response is to organize a network of mutual support – friends and neighbors willing to volunteer their time and talents. Older adults can get help when they need it and also stay social, preventing the negative effects of isolation.
Along with other local villages across the state, we make up The Village Common of Rhode Island. The Village Common of RI is a volunteer-driven, membership based, nonprofit organization with villages on Aquidneck Island and in Barrington, Burrillville, Edgewood, Glocester, Providence and Westerly. Each village has members and the volunteers who assist them, supported by the small administrative staff of The Village Common of RI. People can be both members and volunteers.
