Thank you for your interest in Village Voices, The Village Common’s showcase of creativity. We are accepting submissions in all media: 2- and 3-dimensional art, creative writing, craftwork, transformative ideas, and art collections. If you are a multi-disciplinary artist working in a variety of media, we suggest concentrating on a single media for each submission. Submit again later featuring your work in a different medium.
HOW TO SUBMIT TO VILLAGE VOICES
Each entry in Village Voices will include these items: a photograph of you, if you wish, and photography of your art. If you are a writer, include a photo of your book, magazine cover, or title page, and the text of your written piece(s). Just as important as your art, is your personal story and your artist’s statement.
Your name: What is the name you wish us to publish with your submission?
Photo of you: Preferably only you in the photo.
Biography: What would you like us to know about you? We’re interested in all your interests. We can voice-record and transcribe your oral statement if you wish.
Artist’s statement: Tell us about you as a creative person. If you are a collector, tell us about your fields of interest.
Photographs of your artwork: Please take the time to make a suitable photo. Lighting your object is very important, and a creative pursuit in itself. We can help with photography if you request it.
3-Dimensional. We suggest selecting a neutral background instead of, for instance, your mantel. A plain fabric background or wall is perfect. Use a moveable light to bring out texture or contours. Two light sources, one for highlight and one to fill in shadows, is a good combination.
2-Dimensional. Please square the camera to the center of the field to avoid skew. If the art is behind glass, avoid reflections by keeping a relatively dark environment behind you.
Creative writing. Depending on the length of your piece, it may be printed in whole, or only the opening paragraphs or a page will appear at first, with the rest on a separate web page.
Transformative idea. Show some visual evidence of what your idea produced: a meeting, a document, a revolution.
