- Chinatown (1974) Directed by Roman Polanski (Available on Prime and Kanopy) Cocky Private Eye Jake Gittes is hired by what he thinks is the wife of the water commissioner to spy on her husband. This great film from a great era in American cinema takes all the tropes of the classic detective story and makes them new.
- Rear Window (1954) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock (Available on Prime and Kanopy) Rear Window is another classic of American cinema and one of Hitchcock’s greatest films. L.B. Jeffries, a photographer and adventurer, is laid up in his apartment with a broken leg. In his boredom, he begins to watch the neighbors across the courtyard. Does he see evidence of a murder? Or are his ambivalent feelings about the beautiful Lisa Fremont coloring his conclusions?
