DEI Whaling Museum Trip


Come on a field trip to the New Bedford Whaling Museum “The Wider World & Scrimshaw” sponsored by The Village Common DEI Committee. Join us for a look at Indigenous carving traditions and how they were affected by whaling in the 1800s.




This exhibit takes the Museum’s scrimshaw collection (objects carved by whalers on the byproducts of marine mammals) and places it in conversation with carved decorative arts and material culture made by Indigenous community members from across the Pacific and Arctic.


Native communities across Oceania, the Pacific, and Arctic have cosmologies related to whales, distinctive maritime traditions involving marine mammals, and vibrant carving styles. They were also impacted by commercial whaling ventures in the 1800s and the external pressures of colonialism and Western empire-building.

This exhibit is only available until Nov. 11, 2024. $21 dollars for seniors; AAA members 10% off.

We are departing the First Unitarian church parking lot at noon if you’d like to carpool from Providence. Others may prefer to meet at the museum at 1:30. We’ll find a restaurant afterwards to get refreshments and talk about the exhibit. This is a great opportunity to see the Whaling Museum if you haven’t been there before! There are other exhibits in addition to the one above that you may view while we’re there.
